The Supreme Court has intervened in a contentious case surrounding the cancellation of over 25,000 assistant teacher and non-teaching staff appointments in West Bengal, a decision previously made by the Calcutta High Court.

The High Court's order has been set aside, providing temporary relief to the affected candidates. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, leading the bench, noted the importance of maintaining public faith in the recruitment process during the hearing, stating, "People will lose faith."

"The public job is so scarce.... Nothing remains if the faith of the people goes. This is systemic fraud. Public jobs are extremely scarce today and are looked at for social mobility. What remains in the system if their appointments are also maligned? People will lose faith, how do you countenance this?"

"CBI to continue its investigation into the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam case. However, it will not take any coercive steps against any official or candidate," said the court in its order.
